Camp Meade was one of 16 cantonments authorized by Congress and built for troops drafted for the war in Europe. Its mission was to train and prepare for deployment. Selected because of its close proximity to the railroad, the port of Baltimore and Washington D.C., the location that still serves Ft Meade well today. During WW I, more than 400,000 soldiers passed through Camp Meade, as it served as training site for three infantry divisions, three training battalions, and one depot. .brigade. .
